After B’nai Mitzvah our students are encouraged to continue their Jewish education both informally and formally. They have opportunities to serve as classroom aides in our Religious School, participate in services as prayer leaders and Torah readers, join our youth group, and are privileged to enroll in Makom, the Community Jewish high school. We strongly encourage our students to take advantage of these activities to strengthen their connection to their Jewish identity and heritage.
Makom

Shalom…

Welcome to MAKOM!  MAKOM is a community wide high school program coordinated by the Center for Jewish life and Learning at the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven.  All Jewish teens in grades 8-12 from Temple Beth David are invited to join over a hundred other teens and enroll in MAKOM.

Values…

Play an important part in our school philosophy.  MAKOM is committed to providing students with opportunities to engage in Judaism in a meaningful way.  The Jewish concepts of klal yisrael (respect for each other), Talmud torah (study of Torah), tikkun olam (repairing the world), gemillut chasadim (acts of kindness), and derkh eretz (ethical behavior) are intrinsic to the MAKOM community.

MAKOM provides you with an opportunity to immerse yourself in these values by offering you a diverse array of hands-on, and challenging courses.

Classes…

Are offered on Wednesday evenings at the JCC in Woodbridge from 7:00-9:00 PM.  MAKOM classes meet for either a full semester (12 sessions) or a minimester (6 sessions).  Students can choose any combination of full and minimester courses and are encouraged to select classes that will help them create meaningful connections to Judaism and the Jewish community.

Transportation is provided from Cheshire for an additional fee.

In addition to our classes, MAKOM offers other opportunities for our students to grow their connection to the Jewish community.

These include:

o       Philadelphia Trip – a 2 day trip focusing on issues of hunger and homelessness

o       Mifgash Israel – a 10 day experience with our peers in Israel

o       Youth Philanthropy Programs like TACT (Teens Acting for Community and Tzedakah), Build a Tzedakah Fund and MAKOM service learning night

o       MAKOM Shabbat – a student led Friday night Shabbat experience

o       Amazing Race MAKOM – a one day experience engaging you in all aspects of the Jewish community

MAKOM is the place…

Where do you want to go and how do you want to get there?  MAKOM is the place for many different experiences for our students and their families – use this map as your guide to help get you to the place where you want to be within the Jewish community.  The journey is the best part – welcome to your place.
